This is a “wordle”, a text cloud created from our blog, sizing words on their frequency.  I plan to use this with kids’ writing this year and I just thought it was beautiful.

sd-intro-pbs

If you click on the blue text above, you can view the proposed powerpoint for introducing PBS to the staff.  The basic presentation was created by Region XIII and it has been edited slightly to incorporate the work we generated at the summer meeting and can be finalized easily at our August 6th meeting.  Please view it prior to the meeting if possible.

Place: FCE

This is the survey to be given to staff. We need to decide what questions to ask.

  1. Plan the staff development Day 8/19/2008
  • Complete an agenda for staff development – try to decide what we want “in place” and what we would like the staff to work on
  • Decide what activities we could do with staff i.e. go take pictures of teachers modeling how to play on playground equipment

6.  Make power point

  • Be sure to include data and observations of the cafeteria and bus area.
  • Include injuries and referrals data

PBS Initiative

June 18, 2008

NEW!  Look at the right hand column to see “subpages” added within categories, particularly those pages now appearing under Common Area Norms.

Forest Creek Elementary will impliment PBS (Positive Behavior Support)  a research-based initiative designed to benefit students and staff in the classroom and in common areas.

Why is PBS Important?

In the past, school-wide discipline has focused maily on reacting to specific student misbehaviors by implementing punishment-based strategies including reprimants, loss of privileges, office referrals, suspensions, and expulsions.  Research has shown that the implementation of punishment, especially when it is used inconsistently and in the absence of other positive strategies, is ineffective.  Introducing, modeling and reinforcing positive social behavior is an important part of a student’s educational experience.  Teaching behavioral expectations and rewarding students for following them is a much more positive approach than waiting for misbehavior to coccur before responding.  The purpose of school-wide PBS is sto establish a climate in which is appropriate behavior is the norm.
                                                     - Excerpt from Region XIII Education Service Center
Positive Behavior Support Newsletter, Summer 2008

During a two-day workshop in June, the PBS team (named the Coyote Pack) looked at school data, determined areas for growth and discussion with the full campus and spent time determining key expectations.

PBS is likened to RTI, using data collection to identify areas of concern and then implementing and evaluating changes made.  It operates on the social and emotional levels vs. the academic areas documented by RTI.

PBS, when implemented in conjunction with CHAMPS at the classroom level will increase teaching time by reducing behavior problems, discipline and office referrals.  The focus will be on high expectations and consistency — the heart of good teaching practice.

What are your questions, contributions and concerns?  Please post – EVERYONE’s Input is important!
